Disrupted Skin Barrier

Eczema, Rosacea, Psoriasis

Your skin is made up of layers, each of which performs important functions in protecting your body.

The outermost layer of epithelial cells the stratum corneum is often described as a protecting wall to the skin cells. Corneocytes that are bound together by mortar-like lipids acts as your skin barrier.

Without an effective skin barrier, the water inside your body would escape and evaporate, leaving you completely dehydrated.

Without it, all sorts of harmful environmental toxins and pathogens could penetrate your skin and wreak havoc in your body.

Examples of a disrupted skin barrier are Eczema, Rosacea Psoriasis. Symptoms can vary from a mild rash to a more severe condition that is present for long periods of time. It is a common condition with Eczema affecting one in three New Zealanders.

A disrupted skin barrier causes the skin to become dry, itchy, and red and occasionally weep.

The main goal of treatment is to eliminate itching which, in left untreated, can cause the condition to get worse.

A healthy skin barrier

Regulating hydration is an important tool of the skin in protecting itself against harmful external influences. A healthy skin has a stable amount of water that leaves the body (TEWL). The upper skin layer consists of approximately 30% water. This level is necessary for optimal functioning of the skin.

A damaged skin barrier

When the skin barrier is disrupted, the body loses an abnormal high volume of water through the skin. This will result in a decrease of the normal water percentage in the epidermis, causing the skin barrier to disfunction. This vulnerable skin is unable to heal and protect itself.

Complaints arise such as severe itching, redness, dry skin etc. This in turn can cause, among other things, unfavourable scar development, trigger eczema and stagnation of wound healing. This skin needs optimal hydration of the epidermis and restoration of the barrier function to be able to recover.

How does ALHYDRAN work? Healthy vs disrupted skin barrier
How does ALHYDRAN work?

The hydrating effect

ALHYDRAN Eczema cream has a double function, both necessary for repairing a disrupted skin barrier:

  1. Optimal hydration of the epidermis
  2. Skin barrier recovery

ALHYDRAN restores the moisture balance within 2 hours. (scientifically proven), due to:

  • Powerful hydration
  • Moisture retention (via occlusion)

ALHYDRAN contains ingredients, such as antioxidants, which protect the skin against free redicals. These unique restorative effects, in combination with optimal hydration and occlusion, ensure that the disrupted skin barrier can recover itself.

The risk of scarring is decreased, existing complaints such as itching are relieved, eczema triggers are reduced, to promote optimal skin healing.
